Hope I saved someone out there a little time! Took me an entire day of Googling to figure out something that works on Sierra TODAY because I can't wait for an unknown number of months for Karabiner to get updated for Sierra due to my job. Lastly, I tried Ukelele (free) which doesn't have the most friendly interface and would not remap the caps lock key for me, although it did seem to work for other keys but I didn't explore the app much because it wouldn't do what I needed it to. However, if you're looking for a free option right this second that works on a MacBook's built-in keyboard, this is a viable option. I was able to get this very early version partially working and remapping caps lock to backspace, but the app did not play nice with my external keyboard's function/media keys so I had to uninstall it. However, that developer is currently working on making an app called Karabiner-Elements (free) which combines the functions of both of those apps and is compatible with Sierra. It turns out that Karabiner (free) (disables keys) and Seil (free) (remaps caps lock to backspace) used to work on Max OS X 10.11 but no longer work on macOS 10.12 Sierra.
